1 IN 20 DRIVERS ADMIT TO UPDATING FACEBOOK AND TWITTER WHILST DRIVING

A survey has shown that one in 20 drivers have read a post on a social networking site like Facebook or Twitter whilst behind the wheel.

The survey of over 2,000 drivers shows motorists are even going beyond just calling whilst driving and are now even posting to social networking sites.

Worse still, a third of drivers (31%) have admitted to answered a phone call and 22 percent have made a phone call whilst driving. Males, particularly, seem to be worst with 5 percent more (25% males to 20% female).

In excess of a quarter of motorists (28%) admitted to looking at a text while behind the wheel and 18 percent admitted to sending a text.

This is a staggering number of drivers that are putting other motorists in danger when using their mobile for social networking use on the road.

Although, government campaigns have tried to persuade motorists to stay off the phone but this report shows that the amount of motorists is greater than ever shown.

Car Technology expert at Halfords, Clare Pritchard, said:
"Whilst it is always better to pull into a safe place and stop the car before using the phone, most drivers will continue to want the security and reassurance of a mobile phone whilst on the move. However it seems there is still some way to go in ensuring that drivers who do use mobile phones do so legally and drive with due care and attention."
