After receiving complaints about ‘adult content’, communications giant Apple has decided to pull thousands of apps from its Apps Store.
Users will no longer be able to purchase most apps that featured scantily clad women and men.
The decision was made after the App Store approval team witnessed “an increasing number of apps containing very objectionable content” according to Philip Schiller, senior VP of worldwide product marketing.
The apps featured women for the most part, causing the company to receive a number of complaints from women who found the content “too degrading and objectionable,” and parents who didn’t want their children exposed to such material, says Schiller.
One app called Wobble iBoobs – where users can snap a photograph of any object, mark two points on the photo and watch the object wobble – was removed by Apple for implying that the photograph should be of women’s breasts although, technically, anything can be ‘wobbled’.
The decision means that developers who were previously making serious cash through the App Store will now experience a dramatic decrease in revenue. Apple insists the decision was ultimately made to protect minors using its products.
