AT&T has developed a greener way to charge mobile phones and one that could also adopt a one size fits all rule too.
The new mobile phone charger is called the ZERO charger and will sell for $30 from May. It is a charger that detects when its detached from the phone and turn off so no power will be wasted when plugged in and unused.
AT&T believe power wasted on chargers that are plugged in and unused could provide electricity for 24,000 homes per year. The ZERO charger will solve the fact that many people will it plugged in when not being used and even then the charger will draw current.
However, ZERO charger will be just pre-empt the universal charger set to be released in 2012 - a one size fits all charger.
The Universal Charging Solutions (UCS) is a specification that is being pushed by the Mobile Association and promises to cut half of the numbers of chargers produced.
The AT&T ZERO will support any mobile phone with a Micro USB port, the standard connector all phone makers have agreed to use in their UCS solutions.
