HTC SMART FOR MASS MARKET

HTC, manufacturers of only high-end handsets such as Hero or Google Nexus One, have introduced a mid-range mobile.

Friday, January 8th, 2010

HTC, manufacturers of only high-end handsets such as Hero or Google Nexus One, have introduced a mid-range mobile handset on the operating system Qualcomm BREW MP.

The mobile phone producers have only ever before released handsets powered by Windows mobile or Android, but the HTC Smart runs on a new operating system which theoretically make this a cheaper device for a wider market.

Qualcomm BREW MP is more commonly seen in US than Europe but featured on the INQ1 handset. In 2010 it will be competiting with the likes of Symbian and Samsung's Bada that are also geared towards a wider market.

The implementation of Qualcomm's operating system isn't the only sign of HTC's change of tact - the HTC Smart is also more basic in design.

The Smart has a 2.8" touch screen, 3 megapixel camera with flash, 3.5g support, music player, 3.5mm audio socket, Bluetooth and a MicroSD slot for expanding memory. The device weighs in total 108 grams.

There is no pricing available for the HTC Smart but when released in spring it is expected to retail for under £200.
