iPHONE 4 V BLACKBERRY BOLD

BLACKBERRY BOLDThe iPhone 4 versus a Blackberry may seem like an odd competition – pure indulgence versus pure functionality and business. They arguably serve different purposes and looking at these two side by side isn’t comparing apples with apples, so to speak.

However, they both have one thing in common – both are high-end smartphones that are well received in the business community. The Blackberry is the businessman’s best friend, whilst the shiny new iPhone 4 is the must-have status symbol of the mobile world. These two are closer alike that you might first think. It has, after all, been pondered in the some consumer’s mind at some point – should I get a Blackberry or should I get an iPhone? Which is what this series is all about.

So, without further ado, let’s see how the Bold 9700 and iPhone 4 compare when matched up together…

iPHONE 4 – BE NEXT TO GET YOURS

BLACKBERRY BOLD ON THREE – £30 PER MONTH

Dimensions Draw
The iPhone 4 measures just 115.2 x 58.6 x 9.3mm, against the Blackberry’s Bold 9700′s 109 x 60 x 14.1mm. Although the Blackberry is shorter in height, the iPhone 4 is much slimmer and less wide. However, the Bold brings this to a draw as it is lighter at just 122g against the iPhone 4′s 137g.

Display Winner: iPhone 4
There’s not much contest here. The iPhone 4 ‘retina’ display is a larger 3.5″ with an insane pixel resolution of 960 x 640, whereas the Bold has a slight 2.4″ with just a 480 x 360 pixel count. The Bold might be a joy to look at, but the iPhone 4 will blow you away.

Engine Room Winner: iPhone 4
Another easy one for the iPhone 4 really. With Apple A4 CPU and 512MB RAM this will outspeed the Bold any day. The Bold won’t ever let you down, but only has half the RAM at 256MB. The iPhone 4 is far more powerful.

Battery Draw
The iPhone 4 only has a standby battery life of 300 hours, whilst the Bold can last up to 500 hours. However, confusingly the iPhone 4 has 7 hours of talk time whilst the Bold has only 6. This one is a draw.

Imaging Winner:iPhone 4
This is getting quite silly really. The iPhone 4 has a 5 megapixel camera and 720p HD video recording which can be edited on iMovie apps. What does the Bold have? A 3.2 megapixel camera and video recording.

Software Winner: iPhone 4
iPhone IOS 4.0 is the updated operating system for the iPhone 4 that supports the likes of multi-tasking, customisation and playlist creation. The Bold doesn’t really keep up here but maybe when version 6.0 is released it might stand a chance. Sorry Blackberry.

Storage Winner: iPhone 4
Crikey. Apple are killing it. 16GB or 32GB versus 256MB.

Price Winner: Blackberry Bold
The Bold finally wins one as you can grab this SIM Free at just £379.99 whilst an iPhone 4 outlay will set you back £499.99. Though on the evidence of things, the Apple smartphone seems a lot more worth the extra hundred or so.

Verdict
OK, so maybe this battle was a bit one sided. The Bold isn’t as fresh out of the blocks as the iPhone 4, but still any Blackberry user would tell you that this is still a fantastic smartphone. I don’t know any Blackberry user who isn’t more than happy with their Bold, but still, iPhone 4 again reigns champion due to its ultra-impressive, high-end specification.
