iPHONE 4 V HTC EVO 4G
An HTC competitor hasn’t yet beaten the iPhone 4 but the HTC Evo 4G has got to be the closest match, even more so than the Desire.
TheSamsung Galaxy S beat the iPhone 4 last week, so we’ve proved it is possible to kill an iPhone, even if just on paper.
So let’s see if the Evo 4G can do the same again…
HTC EVO 4G ON BEST BUY FROM $199
Dimensions Winner: iPhone4
As the slimmest smartphone in the world the iPhone 4 has a strong advantage here, measuring just 115.2 x 58.6 x 9.3mm, whilst the HTC Evo 4G is over 3mm’s thicker at 122 x 66 x 13 mm. The Evo in also weighs at a mahoosive 170g. Though that’s not really that heavy, it will feel it compared to the feather-light 137g of the iPhone 4.
Display Winner: iPhone 4
The iPhone 4 is equipped with a ‘retina’ display which is 4 times better than the previous iPhone 4 and much better than the HTC Evo 4G. Although the Evo has a crazy big 4.3″ display with 480 x 800 pixel count it just doesn’t compare with the iPhone 4′s 960 x 640-pixel resolution which on a 3.5″ display creates a smaller but infinitely sharper look.
Engine Room Draw
Neither of these phones is hardly starved of power under the hood – the iPhone 4 has an A4 chip with 512MB RAM, and the Evo 4G has 1Ghz Snapdragon processor with 512MB RAM. Both will perform tasks at lightning fast pace so you won’t have time to get impatient.
Battery Winner: iPhone 4
The HTC Desire won on battery life here but the HTC Evo 4G doesn’t even start to compete with only a measly 146 hours of standby battery time – less than half of the iPhone 4′s 300 hours of standby time.
Imaging Winner: HTC Evo 4G
Steve Jobs claims it’s not all about megapixels and whilst we know it’s not, we also know he’s pretty good at excuses, and that the iPhone 4′s 5 megapixel camera can’t compete with the HTC Evo 4G’s 8 megapixel camera. On top of that video recording and playback on both is 720p HD. First win for the Evo.
Software Draw
Both smartphones have excellent software – the iPhone IOS 4.0 is recently updated and has the benefit of access to hundreds of thousands of apps. Despite this, the iPhone 4 isn’t doing anything the Androids can’t yet (despite a slightly larger app market) so it’s a draw here.
Storage Draw
Your choices are as normal with the iPhone – 16GB or 32GB internal memory. Equally you can expand up to 32GB with a MicroSD card on the Evo 4G. So another draw.
Price Draw
You can get an iPhone 4 16GB from $199 on a 2 year AT&T contract from the Apple store. Whilst you can get an HTC Evo 4G from $199 on a 2 year contract through Best Buy.
Verdict
The iPhone 4 won easily here, clinching a lot of its categories due to its super high-end specification. Having said, the Evo 4G has a lot going for it, so the real argument comes down to Android V Apple.
