NOKIA TARGETS OVER 500 MILLION PHONE SALES IN 2010

Nokia’s mobile phone unit leader, Rick Simonson, has told The Economic Times of India that Nokia are aiming to sell in excess over 500 million mobile phones in 2010.

The mobile phone giant have dwarfed analysts estimation of roughly 460 million mobile phone units by aiming to accommodate over 40% of the market in accounting for two of every five mobile handsets sold.

Their Nokia phones in 2010 will work on Symbian, S40 and Maemo platforms. It has already been announced by Nokia that there will only be one Maemo phone so both Symbian and S40 will be expected to bring the majority of the 500 million phone sales. Simonson added that there is only room for four or five mobile operating systems in the mobile phone market (there is currently about 10).

Also, as previously stated, Nokia will halve their smartphone portfolio this year, compared to 2009, so much of Nokia’s output this year is expected to be handsets that are more affordable or mid-range phones.
