Mobile companies Orange and O2 have allegedly ordered “hundreds” of micro SIM cards – possibly to start testing Apple’s latest creation the iPad on their networks – according to well-known card manufacturer Gemalto.
Although the iPad is technically unlocked, the device will only be compatible using a micro SIM, an updated and miniaturized alternative to a normal SIM card.
The fact that a device eight times the size of the iPhone has reduced the size of its SIM card has caused some speculation that the Apple has created a cheeky way for networks to lock their customers.
Additionally, the only other device on the US market that uses the same SIM card is a children’s GPS watch, which has raised some questions in the technology world.
French digital security company Gemalto currently serves more than 700 million customers over 400 mobile networks worldwide.
The UK companies had no comment when questioned about launching the micro SIM and thereby supporting the iPad.
