What are the Options?
There are 2 ways that you can start getting cheaper international calls with T-Mobile, Orange, O2 or Vodafone now.
Get an International Sim
Orange, O2 and Vodafone offer free sims that come ready with an international calling tariff. This means all you have to do is get a phone to put the sim in and you can start making cheaper calls home straight away.
Get a International Tariff add-on
This offers the minimal amount of hassle for international calling as you can keep your current deal and tariff, and just add cheaper calls abroad on top.
All you have to do is opt into one of the many boosters, bolt-ons and add-ons that are available. For many this is free, for some there is a small monthly cost.
If you want to make calls abroad, the posters in newsagents will tell you to get a special international calling sim.
While Lyca, Lebara and Vectone do have impressively cheap tariffs, everything about them is cheap. You will save money on international calls, but at the cost of the usual extras we expect from our tariffs.
So what is the alternative?
Get an international sim deal with either your current network or on of the other major UK phone networks
The ugly truth is this:
Because Lyca, Lebara and Vectone only do international calls, they can afford to be a lot cheaper than the major networks.
On average, a mobile call with the major UK networks is 27p more expensive than if you used Lyca, Lebara or Vectone.
But here is the good news.
If you are calling a land line, then it is only 3p cheaper to use lebara, lyca or vectone compared to your regular network.
So What Are the Benefits?
What you have to remember is that all that Lebara, Lyca and Vectone offer is cheap international calls. If you are prepared to spend a few extra pennies per call, then you get all the extra benefits from being with a major network.
For instance, if you love going to the cinema, then get a sim with orange. With an international calling deal, you will still be saving money over regular international calling costs, but you can also get Orange Wednesdays.
A few 2-for-1 trips to the cinema later and you’ll get back the extra money you could have saved by going for the cheaper calls.
As well as perks such as Orange Wednesdays, T-Mobile’s night in, or O2′s priority tickets, you will also get the added bonus of cheap calls and texts within the UK as well as for abroad.
It’s a matter of simplifying everything.
Before you may have thought you’d have to have separate phones or separate sims for making calls home.
But with these international calling deals you can be walking down the street surfing the web on your phone or texting your friends, then you remember it’s time for your weekly call home and using the same phone you make a cheap call back home.
