SMARTPHONES WILL OUTSELL MOBILE PHONES BY 2012

Studies at Infotenic Research, smartphones are increasingly dominating the majority of mobile phone sales.

An increasing ability to access high-speed data anywhere in the UK (with a recent spend of millions on extending into UK’s rural areas) is estimated to be the cause of increasing Smartphone sales.

This is the benefit of Smartphones as they allow rather than just SMS and phone calls, they use web browsers to access the internet just as you might on a laptop or PC.

“Smartphones are on track to post a 14.5 per cent increase in the number of units sold worldwide in 2009, and a 21 per cent compound annual growth rate from 2008 to 2013, significantly better than other mobile phone segments,” analyst for mobile devices at Infonetic Research, Richard Webb.

“While smartphone revenue is expected to dip in 2009… we expect it to pick up in 2010 and continue growing, easily outstripping the combined revenue of standard mobile phones by 2012.”

It is believed 1.1 billion mobile phones will be sold across the world, of which Nokia will lead the pack. Research in Motion ( who design Blackberries) and Apple, are gaining ground. Although iPhone won’t wear the smartphone crown forever:

“Competition for the iPhone is increasing though,” warns Webb. “And while iPhone applications are proliferating, the iPhone operating system is sure to face stiff competition from the open-source Android platform. Apple will have to fight hard to drive its market share back above 10 per cent.”
