T-Mobile MyTouch 3G Slide Review
The T-Mobile self-branded 3G Slide is manufactured by the guys at HTC and is the latest in their line-up of MyTouch 3G efforts.
Look & Feel
Naturally, the MyTouch 3G Slide has a bit of added size to it due to its slide-out QWERTY keyboard. This is acceptable though as the keyboard is a welcome addition which sits nicely into the sleek design by continuing the curved style of its face. It’s also one of the best keyboards we’ve used, with a four-row design which has the perfect spacing and feel – the award goes to HTC for this, no doubt.
The MyTouch 3G Slide’s slight 3.4″ screen is vivid and bright despite only being WVGA, rather than HVGA, and felt solid to touch. The slide action wasn’t the best on the keyboard, a bit clunky but not that noticeable after a time with the 3G Slide.
Usability
The 3G Slide runs on Android 2.1 (an update to 2.2 is on the horizon) and though doesn’t use HTC Sense, the interface has obviously been strongly inspired by it – most notably, a glossy weather app and the incorporation of HTC’s FriendStream.

But it also has its own unique widgets such as MyModes which is for customization of your homepage for a set amount of time, ie. if you want to avoid work at the weekends you can take your email app of your homescreen on weekends. This is a really nice touch to the 3G slide.
What’s more, with a Qulacomm processor under the hood this thing runs very fast, even with apps running in the background. We never saw too much of a drop in speed and this is impressive for a phone at this price point.
Camera
The 5 megapixel camera lets the 3G Slide down a bit, so if you’re a photographer this probably isn’t the phone for you. It works with a slick one-touch focus and very little lag, but when we say 5 megapixels that really doesn’t equate in quality – images taken on this will mostly look blurred and splotchy.
Verdict
The MyTouch 3G Slide is a surprisingly solid and stylish mid-weight Android phone and definitely the best T-Mobile have put out to date. We were pleased to see the new slide-out keyboard wasn’t just a useless extra lump, but rather an advantageous addition and one of the best we’ve used. The camera is nothing to shout about but everything else on this smart handset makes up for it.
